We love the verse that says “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” Proverbs 18:24. Most consider Jesus the ultimate fulfilment of that statement. He sticks closer than any brother. But what about a mother? Could Jesus be closer than even your own mother?
Yes. Not only is it possible, but God makes a promise about it. With Mother’s Day on everyone’s mind, it’s hard to imagine anyone closer to children—even grown children—than their own mother. What a strong, important bond. A woman’s children define her and shape her entire life, her memories, her sense of purpose, her sense of self—children are everything to their moms. Moms love them with all of who they are. But God is even closer to the children than their own mother. I remember my parents trying to explain that to me, that God loved me even more than they did. When I was little, I could not understand that. How could an invisible God who never gave me a hug or spoke to me love me more than my own parents? Yet He promises exactly that.
“If you say, ‘The Lord has abandoned me. The Lord has forgotten me!’ Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the child of her womb? Yet even if mothers forget, I WILL NOT FORGET YOU. Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands” Isaiah 49:14-16.
God, thank you that your love for us eclipses even that of our own mothers. Thank you for moms and all the love and compassion that they give us—and help us to understand that You love us EVEN MORE THAN OUR OWN MOMS.
