“Too old for Instagram, too young for Life Alert.”
“In God we trust—but wash your hands.”
“Life’s too short to live in Houston.”
People love these things. But not all the words some sign painter strings together are equal. One sign might be a joke from a redneck comedian, while another bears words from a different source, such as one my mom had hanging in the kitchen: “My grace is sufficient for you” 2 Corinthians 12:9.
Some are just silly and fun, or cute and nostalgic. But the words of scripture are different. Whether it’s painted in glitter or spelled out in noodles or stitched onto a throw pillow, God’s word “WILL NOT RETURN VOID [empty].” When God’s word reaches you, it will do what He sent it to do—whether it reaches you on a bumper sticker, a tee shirt, or a fortune cookie.
“For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there without saturating the earth, and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My Word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I please.” Isaiah 55:10-11.
God’s Word will NOT RETURN EMPTY. It will ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING. Don’t dismiss “Hobby Lobby Art” if it contains scripture. Because it WILL always bring God the fruit He sent it for. Consider fishing:
EVERY time God casts His line, He catches a fish. EVERY. SINGLE. CAST. Because God’s word WILL NOT return void.
And that plaque over Mama’s kitchen table? I memorized it without even trying, and it became so special to me. It is a key scripture, and I think of it often: God’s grace is ALWAYS sufficient. His grace is enough.
Pray. God, help me to love your Word wherever I find it. Help me to read it, study it, memorize it, and LOVE it. Give me a HUNGER for Your word! And help me to submit myself and all my ideas to the authority of Your word.
