When Jesus gave us our mission statement, he included a phrase I had not noticed until yesterday’s sermon at Kingsland:
“Teach them to observe all things that I have commanded” Matthew 28:20.
In context, that means that my mission in life is to “Go… and make disciples… baptize them… and teach them to observe all things commanded by Jesus.” As a father, my number one job is to disciple my children. I know you know Jesus, and have been baptized.
But have I taught you to OBSERVE ALL THINGS commanded by Jesus? Our church culture is so focused on God’s Grace, love, and forgiveness, that we do not pay attention to obeying Jesus.
People are uncomfortable with the word “obey.” No one wants to tell young people that God has rules, and that He expects you to obey Him.
Most sermons convey the message that God loves you no matter what, so relax and feel good. Don’t worry; be happy. Hakuna Matata.
But Dietrich Bonhoeffer said Jesus is a tough leader: “When Jesus Christ calls a man, he bids him ‘Come and die’” See Matthew 16:24.
Those are strong words. But why would following Christ be easy, like lying around in a recliner? If the Navy Seals can push a man, shouldn’t Jesus push even harder? No one can challenge you like He can. In fact, researchers believe one reason men are not more active in churches is because they are not being challenged.
If following Jesus seems easy, you’re doing it wrong. Following Christ is a challenge. Consider:
- Love your enemies. Matt. 5:43-47.
- Turn the other cheek. Matt. 5:38-42
- Choose: Do you love God or money? Matt. 6:24
- Don’t worry—seek God. Matt. 6:25-33.
- Deny yourself, take up a cross of your own, and follow Me. Luke 9:23-25.
- If the world hated Me, it will hate you too. John 15:18-20.
- Jesus is the only way to God. John 14:6.
Pray. Ask God to call you to RADICAL OBEDIENCE, to make your life DIFFERENT.
