God gives each of us gifts that we can use to serve Him.
I like writing. In a public school, writing projects sometimes created opportunities to share the gospel. In senior English I wrote a paper about Plato’s “Simile of the Cave,” and used the shadow metaphor to contrast being lost with being saved.
In an honors art class, the teacher asked the Jewish students to write papers about aspects of Easter, and the non-Jewish students to write about Passover. I convinced her to let me write about the connection between the two. The teacher was reluctant but gave in. Then we read our papers aloud—before eating all the traditional foods—and she skipped me (whether on purpose or not, I do not know).
But I spoke up and she let me read. For research, I had read the amazing book CHRIST IN THE PASSOVER, by the founder of “Jews for Jesus,” and I wrote a great paper. The Jewish students actually commented on the amazing parallels between the Passover Lamb and the Christian belief that Jesus is the real “Passover Lamb.”
The early Church Fathers also seized opportunities. Stephen, Peter, Paul, and others preached while under arrest.
Being arrested was not about being a captive, but about having a captive audience!
Every time Paul came to court to defend himself, he preached an incredible sermon. He never missed an opportunity. In fact, King Agrippa stopped him:
“‘Are you going to persuade me to become a Christian so easily?’
‘I wish before God,’ said Paul, ‘that whether easily or with difficulty, not only you but all who listen to me today might become as I am—except for these chains’” Acts 26:28-29.
Opportunities are all around you. Sometimes it’s just listening and being a friend. Other times you can make a few comments, or have a deep conversation. You might even have a discussion on social media. And there are more formal opportunities, even research papers—you never know. But if you ask for opportunities, God will provide them!
“Pray for us, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned.” Colossians 4:3.
