It is easy to be swept up in humanity’s little dramas. The Olympics is a stunning spectacle—193 nations and a dozen non-nations competing in events that have their own storied history (consider ancient events like archery, marathon running, and wrestling). Athletes carry a flame, light a torch, and promote peace. It is all quite impressive. But the world’s grandest dramas collapse like a house of cards before the throne of God.
“Then I saw a Great White Throne and One seated on it. Earth and Heaven fled from His Presence, and no place was found for them. [Imagine standing before a judge who can terrify the earth itself!]
“I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne. A book was opened, which is the Book of Life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books.
“Then the sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead; all were judged according to their works. Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.… Then the one seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new’ Revelation 20:11-21:1,5.
And Jesus turns to John with a message for us:
“Behold! I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to repay each person according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” Revelation 22:12-13.
Dear God, Never let us be impressed by human achievement. Impress us with You: your work, truth, word, creation, your infinite love and grace. Humble us with more understanding of your greatness, your throne, your holiness. We surrender every decision to you.
