The Einstein Visa: One Way to Escape an Oppressive Regime. Jeremiah 37:17.

“And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained save the poorest sort of the people of the land” 2 Kings 24:14.

The Bible is a book written of the oppressed, by the oppressed, and for the oppressed.

Most of the Bible concerns the oppressed: slaves, refugees, subjects of evil kings, captives, exiles, and citizens with no liberty living under the boot of an occupying power, whether Persia, Greece, or Rome.

Those of us who have never lived under an oppressive, dictatorial government or without liberty and the right to vote must recognize that we are the unicorn in the zoo: we are the ones with lives so good our ancient ancestors could hardly have believed we would one day exist. We are living lives of fantasy, lives of myth past generations would hardly find credible. They could not have imagined or understood us.

And we cannot understand them. We have seen so little of slavery, oppression, war, and genocide. Most of us will never leave our home, put our property on our backs and start over somewhere else. But the Bible is filled with such stories.

[1] The EB-1A and EB-1B visas are both “Employment Based,” and will be granted based on extensive achievements and abilities. The EB-1A does not require an employer’s sponsorship and a job offer (both required by EB-1B), but EB-1A requires a higher standard of achievement and ability.

[2] With over fifty million foreign-born residents, the US is host to more immigrants than the next five nations on that list combined. Thus, whatever your beliefs about our immigration policy, the sheer number of people involved is an indication of the critical importance of US immigration and asylum policy.

Trafficking … in Humans. Jeremiah 52:27.

“Thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land,” Jeremiah 52:27.

But perhaps in our peaceful life in a land of milk and honey, we suffer a unique loss.

These are conditions Americans cannot conceive.

[2] “The New Colossus,” by Emma Lazarus.

*The number is higher than 24. Most of the Bible is a narrative of God’s dealings with a nation without autonomy (as a nation) and without liberty (for individuals). In Genesis, the people have liberty, but are not yet a nation. In Exodus, they become a nation but are under Egypt’s control. Once freed, they have autonomy and liberty in theory, but no homeland–and are thus wandering nomads (fugitives) for forty years. The books of Genesis, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1-2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 1 Chronicles, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Hosea, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, and Habakkuk report the records of a free nation living under the rule of its own kings–and even then, many of those kings were wicked men and oppressors. The entire New Testament chronicles life under Roman rule. By this count, only 19 books of the Bible report the activities of a free people living in a nation with self-rule. To put it another way:

Nineteen books of the Bible report the history of free people living under autonomous self-rule (and many of those rulers were evil oppressors). The remaining 47 books concern people in slavery, in exile, or suffering under the occupying armies of Persia, Greece, or Rome. This is a book about the oppressed, the trafficked, the exploited, the owned.

The Bible is largely a book about people suffering under various kinds of oppression, exile, slavery, trafficking, or the jackbooted thuggery of occupying armies.

Liberty in Christ would have been the first taste of meaningful liberty a Christian experienced.

Woe Be Unto Pastors Who Destroy the Sheep. Jeremiah 23:1.

“Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” Jeremiah 23:1.

“Therefore, thus says the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people: ‘Ye have scattered my flock and driven them away, and have not visited them. Behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings’” Jeremiah 23:2.

“Both prophet and priest are profane, yea, in my house have I found their wickedness” Jeremiah 23:11. “I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies” Jeremiah 23:14.

“You have perverted the words of the living God” Jeremiah 23:36.

“Behold, I will … cast you out of my presence and I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten” Jeremiah 23:39-40.

“‘I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow. And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,’ saith the Lord” Jeremiah 30:13-14. “Their congregation shall be established before me,” Jeremiah 30:20.

[1] As I contemplated writing about Jeremiah 23 and yet another message about scandals in the church, it bothered me that the content was so uninspiring. This is not the stuff of a daily devotional. In fact, it could not be further from the sort of happy thoughts with which most of us like to begin or end our day. Could anything be further from the feel-good words of a poem like David’s 23rd Psalm? Scandals in the church? What a downer! Who wants to talk about that?

God wants to talk about it. Jesus talks about it. The apostle Paul talks about it. The Bible talks about fallen preachers a lot, as a matter of fact. God did not give us his word so we could read a bit of poetry and feel inspired about our day. The Bible is practical advice. It is honest answers to hard questions. It is serious, sober, realistic discussions of many difficult topics. The 23rd Psalm is amazing. But God is much more than our shepherd. And God’s word is much more than the song of a cowboy singing his herd to sleep. God’s word is the best advice available for morals, ethics, economics, finance, relationships, parenting, marriage, governance, running a church, running a nation, fighting a war, or negotiating peace. –And handling scandals in the church. Because God chose to include this in his word, we should study it.

Misplaced Confidence. Jeremiah 49:16.

“‘Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill. Though thou should make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down,’ saith the Lord” Jeremiah 49:16.

I deserve a little swagger—I’m rich!  I deserve special treatment—I’m beautiful! I deserve a bigger office, fancy car, impressive house, after all—I’m smarter than everyone else!

Do you place confidence in your talents, your resume, your looks, or your people skills?

Or maybe it’s your money, your power, your authority, or your experience?

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.’ Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, ‘IF THE LORD WILLS, we will live and also do this and that.’ But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil” James 4:13-16.

My friends and I loved the ‘80s Christian band Petra. None of us had heard of the obscure city in Jordan from which the band took its name. But we soon found out. I had no interest in Petra until I heard their song, “Godpleaser.”

Replace Self-Affirmations with God’s Affirmations. Psalm 139.

Merriam-Webster defines SELF-AFFIRMATION as “the act of affirming one’s own worthiness and value as an individual.”

Lizzo says, “I started talking to my belly this year.” Every day she tells her belly the following: “You deserve all the space in the world to breathe, expand, and contract, and give me life. I love you.”

“I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!”

But don’t get me wrong; the ritual of self-talk is not without value. Memorizing a statement and repeating it daily can be of great value.

HOWEVER, if you were to spend five minutes a day filling your mind with GOD’S WORDS ABOUT YOU, then you would see true results! Replace SELF-affirmations with GOD’s affirmations. Affirm yourself with GOD’s WORDS!

But wait! What’s the difference? Are we simply replacing one bit of warm, feel-good poetry with another? Absolutely not! The difference is that God’s words are objectively true. They are actually, demonstrably, certifiably true.

To address the two questions above, words from the Bible are absolutely true, and they are of infinite value.

“God, you made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous! … You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book … Search me, O God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” Psalm 139:13-16,23-24 (Living Bible).

Again, the practice of daily affirmation can have value. But make it a daily affirmation from God. Memorize powerful lines from God’s word and spend a few minutes quoting those words to yourself daily. That is true affirmation—the kind of affirmation that has the power to change your life forever.

[1] https://hudabeauty.com/us/en_US/blog-powerful-affirmations-celebs-83884.html The article references several other celebrities, but gives no indication the words quoted were statements the celebrities actually spoke to themselves, so I did not include them.

[2] Besides the problems of truth and value, a third problem with today’s self-affirmations is their connection to the quasi-religious doctrine of the so-called law of attraction or “manifestation.” Some who use and promote self-affirmation believe it to be an essential step in ‘manifesting’ the results they hope to see. Manifestation is the false notion that the universe is somehow listening to your words and conforming to your wishes. God hears your words. The Creator of the universe hears your words. But the universe itself—the creation—is inanimate. The universe hears nothing. The universe is not listening. Rather than trying to speak your dreams into existence by talking to a deaf universe, consider praying to the God who made the universe. At least he is actually listening. I have written about “manifestation” or the law of attraction here. https://dadsdailydevotionals.com/2023/05/04/may-the-force-be-with-you/

MEMORIZE: Replace Your Thoughts With God’s Thoughts! Jeremiah 15:16.

Do you do that? Do you hear a powerful word of truth and react to it like it was a good movie? Oh. Well, isn’t that entertaining? What a nice, inspirational message. Now I feel warm inside and things make sense again.

Do you hear incredible, Biblical truth, then react as though it were just another greeting card? Do you shrug and think, Well, that’s a nice sentiment?

DON’T DO THAT!

Just write the Bible verse down. Use a Post-it note. Or an index card. Or the back of an envelope. (These are the three I use most often.) Write down the verse and put it in your car or on your desk or somewhere that you will see it often so you can begin memorizing it. Read it out loud over and over until you can say it without looking. It’s simple.

But the time you spend memorizing the verse will give you time to reflect on it and what it means and how it applies in different ways to different areas of your life. By the time you have memorized the verse, it has gained a powerful foothold in your mind, replacing your wrong thoughts with God’s right thoughts.

Do this several times, with several verses, and your life will really begin to change. Do this dozens of times or a hundred times, and people will not even recognize you anymore. You may no longer recognize yourself—your life will be radically different than it was before. I have experienced this myself.

Memorizing scripture COMPLETELY transformed my life.

“Thy words were found and I did eat them, and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart, for I am called by thy name, O Lord, God of hosts” Jeremiah 15:16.

Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart!

[1] Speaking of outer beauty, I also love 1 Samuel 16:7: “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God does not see as man sees; man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’”

There Are Exceptions to the Principle of Sowing and Reaping. Job 21:13.

good choices + time = prosperity.

bad choices + time = poverty.

The three take a ‘RES IPSA LOQUITOR’ view of suffering: the presence of suffering is proof of sin.

“Why do the wicked live, become old, are mighty in power? Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. [Their bulls and cows have healthy calves, and the wicked parents have healthy children] … They spend their days in wealth” Job 21:7-13.

We must not distort the Biblical principle of sowing and reaping.

“Oh, the depth of riches of both the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments and unfathomable his ways” Romans 11:33.

Jelly Roll and Jeremiah. Jeremiah 11:14.

Image from 20 the Countdown Magazine.

“So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them. Do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you” Jeremiah 7:16.

“Do not pray for this people or offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to me in their time of distress” Jeremiah 11:14.

Then he says it a third time: “Do not pray for the well-being of these people. Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry” Jeremiah 14:11.

It sounds like God is fed-up!

But what’s going on here? I thought God’s mercy was everlasting?

But this is Old Testament stuff, right? No.

“Whoever speaks a word against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or the age to come” Matthew 12:32.

John says do not pray for those who commit this “unpardonable sin”—“There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that” 1 John 5:16.

I only talk to God when I need a favor

And I only pray when I ain’t got a prayer

So, who the hell am I, who the hell am I

To expect a Savior, oh

If I only talk to God when I need a favor?[1]

And don’t wait to talk to him until you need a favor!

[1] “Need a Favor,” song by Jelly Roll, 2023.

[2] Say what you want about Jason DeFord, but he may be the most interesting singer to emerge in years. DeFord, whose mom began calling him “Jelly Roll” when he was still a child, is a unique cross-over artist, whose music has been played on country, rock, alternative, pop, and adult contemporary radio formats. The ex-con with the face tattoos has a kind of universal “street cred” that causes his music to appeal to the widest audiences imaginable. Even Christian contemporary stations are playing his collaboration with Brandon Lake, “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” Jelly Roll writes music that openly tackles personal problems. These lyrics are not simply vulnerable. They are raw. Consequently, many of his songs ask searing questions about spirituality.

The Weeping Prophet Curses His Birthday, but Maintains Hope.

Dear Diary,

Every day is hard now. I don’t remember the last time I enjoyed a nice meal and a few laughs. It’s all so serious all the time. God continues to give me messages of doom and destruction. Honestly, no one even knows my name anymore. They just say, “Here comes the weeping prophet.”

And they call me worse things.

No one likes the bearer of bad news. And I’ve got news for you: Being the bearer of bad news is no picnic either.

These sermons are terrible. Yesterday it was all about how the sword of God’s wrath would be drunk with blood [Jeremiah 46:10]. Try to wrap your head around that metaphor: God’s sword of death will drink so much blood it becomes intoxicated.

But today was new low: cannibalism. That’s right. Actual cannibalism.

God said, “I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and every one shall eat the flesh of his friend” Jeremiah 19:9.

When people call me the ‘weeping prophet’ I want to say, “Of course! Could anyone prophesy this kind of devastation over his own nation and NOT weep?” A man would have to be a sociopath to preach these messages in anger like some kind of nutty religious zealot. I love these people. I love Israel and Judah. I love God’s people, and every day he tells me to prophesy horrible things to them if they won’t repent. There is nothing I can do but weep for them and their bad choices.

I think God weeps too.

You know what else? I still don’t have a wife because God told me not to [Jeremiah 16:1]. No wife and no kids. He won’t even allow me to attend weddings or funerals. Like I said, you’d weep too if you were me.

But IF I DID HAVE A WIFE, I’d be complaining to her instead of scribbling in a diary. And my imaginary wife would say, “Surely it’s not as bad as all that is it?”

And I would answer, “Yes. Here’s an example. God said he would wipe out the nations that take his people captive, but he would only punish us in measure.

“I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee, but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure” Jeremiah 46:28.

Yep. Sure, hun. You’re right. It’s not so bad. God will wipe out the bad guys. But Israel and Judah he will only destroy up to a certain measure. He will correct us without wiping us completely off the map. Yep. Good news. Even the wrath of God has its limits.

Do I sound sarcastic? I am being sarcastic.

I think.

Kind of.

I mean, I love God, and I trust him. But today is another one of those days—like most days—where I hate delivering his messages. I hate being the messenger. I hate my life. It’s all doom and gloom and bad news.

No one wants to hear what I have to say. I’m the ‘oh-no-here-we-go-again’ guy. People see me coming and they cringe.

I feel like Job. (Except Job had a wife and lived to see four generations of his children! Job 42:16.)

What I have in common with Job is that sometimes I wish I’d never been born. I curse the day of my birth. I don’t celebrate it. Why would I?

“Cursed be the day wherein I was born. Let not the day be blessed. Cursed be the man who told my father he had a man-child. That man should have slain me in the womb. My mother should have been my grave. Why did I even come out of the womb? To see a lifetime of labor and sorrow? To live an entire life consumed with shame?” Jeremiah 20:14-18.

The other day I resolved to just stop preaching. To just keep my mouth shut. Mind my own business. Work quietly around the house, do a bit of gardening. Try to be a good neighbor. Retire peacefully. But I couldn’t do it! I failed even at keeping my mouth shut!

“I said, ‘I will not make mention of him, nor speak anymore in his name. But God’s word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I grew weary with holding it in. I could not stay quiet!” Jeremiah 20:9.

Can you see why I hate my life? Why I curse my own birthday? Why everyone calls me the weeping prophet?

And yet, I have hope.

I do.

I see God. I know his hope and his love and his grace and forgiveness.

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope” Jeremiah 29:11.

Even if hope is all I have, I will hold on to my hope in God. Even when I hate my life and curse my birth, I’m never without hope. God’s hope is always there, smoldering inside me, a hot coal of joy. His hope remains.

Gratitude Will Make You Happy; Comparison Will Make You Unhappy. Jeremiah 45:3-5.

Sometimes it just feels like bad luck, like Nothing ever goes right for ME. Or worse,

I’ve served God faithfully for years and STILL nothing ever goes right for ME.

“Woe is me now! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain. I am worn out with groaning and find no rest” Jeremiah 45:3.

“Thus saith the Lord, ‘I will overthrow what I have built and uproot what I have planted throughout the earth. Do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not. For I will bring disaster on all people. But wherever you go, I will let you escape with your life” Jeremiah 45:4-5.

“The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the joy that is coming in heaven” Romans 8:18.
