ECCLESIASTES IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF THE BIBLE. Do You Have a Favorite?

(Everyone says “readers are leaders,” and on that subject, good students are not allowed to entertain doubts. Only the writer of Ecclesiastes will admit that a lifetime of studying and books can be painful and boring and sometimes pointless, that researchers and professors sometimes spend years hunting for needles in haystacks and go to their graves disappointed.)

I LOVE Ecclesiastes. It has changed my life and given me hope and realism and grace in the face of some of the hardest truths of life.

And they are truths. The words of the Teacher—that life is futile and repetitive, that nothing is new, that study can feel or be fruitless, that grief can seem endless, and that riches and success do not satisfy—those are TRUTHS that depressed “losers” understand intuitively and unsatisfied “winners” understand from experience. They are TRUE.

I love Ecclesiastes.

—Ask God to increase your love for His Word, to make you interested, to make you passionate about it, to give you the self-discipline to read it every day, and the humility to submit your heart and life and beliefs to His Word.

Have You Ever Felt the Sting of Rejection? Psalm 118:22.

But God did not reject Him—and only God’s view of things matters. Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. The Lord has done this and it is astounding in our eyes.”

Do you know what a cornerstone is? It is a stone so perfect in size, shape, and strength, the whole building can be built off of that—it has perfect angles, so everything can be measured in relation to the cornerstone. It must be flawless, with no cracks or holes or weak spots. If a stone is flawed, the builders reject it. Jesus is saying the leaders of His day considered Him flawed and they rejected Him. But God made Him the cornerstone, the one stone so perfect God’s entire house can be built on it.

First Corinthians 1:27 says, “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong.”

God uses humble people.

Who is the Greatest in the Kingdom? Matthew 18:1-4.

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, ‘Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven’” Matthew 18:1-4.

Can’t you imagine their reply: A little child? Really? Ha ha. That’s sweet, Jesus. But seriously…. Who’s really the greatest?

CHILDREN ARE HUMBLE.

CHILDREN HAVE AMAZING FAITH.

Do you remember that kind of faith?

Asleep in the Boat. Matthew 8.

Then He said, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Matthew 8:26.

“Why are you fearful, you of little faith?”

I choose to have faith, to face the struggles, to work hard in the middle of the fight, and to remember that He is there, Jehovah Shammah, ‘the One Who’s Standing Near,’ also translated “the God Who is There” from Ezekiel 48:35. That’s him: the God Who is There. Jehovah Shammah.

Sometimes You Need to “Tattle.” Esther 2:21-23.

The point is, sometimes you gotta speak up. Sometimes the “tattler” is the hero. Sometimes the schoolyard loyalty that young people prize so highly is completely wrong—sometimes you have to report dangers and risks and crazy things your peers do or say.

There is no Biblical support for the no-tattling rule.

Sometimes it’s a serious matter and you need to speak up, even if it means an alleged “betrayal” of your best friend or cousin or sibling. Sometimes speaking up will save them even from their own bad decisions.

Facing Tragedy? Ask God to Pour Out a Spirit of Grace and Prayer. Zechariah 12:10.

“Then I will pour out a spirit of grace and prayer on the house of David” Zechariah 12:10.

What a great prayer. If we could be overwhelmed by a passion for prayer and for grace, it would change our lives.

A ‘spirit of grace and prayer’ will help the suffering and the grief-stricken to have a serving, other-centered mindset. Pray for that today.

We Cannot Save Ourselves. Ezekiel 16:63.

“On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water, to make you clean… No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised. Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and … I said to you, ‘Live!’ I made you grow” Ezekiel 16:4-5

“I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments. I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, and I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. So you were adorned with gold and silver … You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen” Ezekiel 16:10-13.

Has God ever blessed you this way? Restored you? Rescued you and turned your life into a thing of amazing beauty? How did you respond?

Israel did not respond well.

“But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by and your beauty became his … You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them” Ezekiel 16:15 and 17.

As the story goes on, Israel commits more and more grievous sins. Finally, God pours out His wrath. But then He returns to His covenant:

“Yet, I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed … and you will know that I am the Lord. Then when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed” Ezekiel 16:60, 62-63.

Something important happens at the end of the story—the final verse of the chapter. Did you catch it?

God says, “when I make atonement for you for all you have done” 16:63.

MAN’S GREATEST WORKS ARE A TOWER OF BABEL. Revelation 20:11-21:1,5.

“Then I saw a Great White Throne and One seated on it. Earth and Heaven fled from His Presence, and no place was found for them. [Imagine standing before a judge who can terrify the earth itself!]

“I also saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne. A book was opened, which is the Book of Life, and the dead were judged according to their works by what was written in the books.

“Then the sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead; all were judged according to their works. Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.… Then the one seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new’ Revelation 20:11-21:1,5.

“Behold! I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to repay each person according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” Revelation 22:12-13.

JESUS IS LOVE AND WRATH. Revelation 19:11-20:12.

This picture generated with A.I.

“I saw heaven opened, and there was a white horse. Its rider is called Faithful and True, and He makes war in righteousness. His eyes were a fiery flame. He wore a robe stained with blood…. A sharp sword came from His mouth, so that He might strike the nations. He will trample the winepress of the fierce wrath of God. And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS….

“Then I saw the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider…. But they were killed with the sword that came from His mouth….

“Then I saw a Great White Throne and One seated on it. EARTH AND HEAVEN FLED FROM HIS PRESENCE…. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books” Revelation 19:11-20:12.
