Do you ever feel discouraged? Philippians 4:8-9

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you” Philippians 4:8-9.

Are you thinking on the good, the lovely, the true? Or have you opened your mind to the corrupt, the perverse, and the evil?

Is your entertainment filled with blood, death, sin, and perversion? Do the characters believe or speak lies about God, the devil, morality, and reality?

If you fill your mind with darkness, then darkness, despair, and hopelessness will fill your heart.

But if you fill your mind with stories about heroes, Godly people who OVERCOME, then you will be an overcomer also.

There is no more powerful antidote to the poisons of pop culture than a few minutes in God’s Word.

HUMILITY = HONOR. Philippians 2:5-11.

God honors humility.

God HIGHLY honors great humility.

“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being found in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God highly exalted Him and has bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” Philippians 2:5-11.

God glorified and exalted Jesus because he humbled himself. God will reward us when we humble ourselves too.

“With humility of mind, let each one of you regard others as more important than yourself” Philippians 2:3.

DIGNITY vs. INDIGNITY: HUMILITY OR HUMILIATION? Psalm 22; Philippians 2:8.

“He saved others but cannot save himself! Come down off that cross so we may believe in you” Matthew 27:42.

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?…. I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised, everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads…. People stare at me. They divide my garments among themselves….” Psalm 22:1,6-7,17-18.

Justice: a Day of Reckoning. Revelation 20:11-15

Do you like justice? Test days? Report cards? A day of reckoning?

And then God will set up the scariest, most impressive, overwhelming courtroom in history: THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT.

“Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire” Revelation 20:11-15.

Imagine God’s throne, so awe inspiring and fearsome that “Earth and heaven flee” from it. (The earth itself runs away?)

And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was thrown into the Lake of Fire (v.15).

DEATH. 2 Kings 34:27-28.

God expects us to be FULLY ENGAGED IN THIS LIFE, and that is difficult for anyone anticipating Heaven.

For Josiah, an early death was a REWARD!

Josiah died at 39—a young age by any reckoning. But Heaven is better than earth, right? And Josiah beat everyone else there! We are all hoping to get there—we should remember that those who get there before us are being spared some of the suffering of this life.

God hates murder and evil and the pain of death MORE than we do—and He will execute justice. But He loves those children.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE LEAVING EARTH. Philippians 1:27.

But who needs instructions?

Can’t we just focus on adventure stories and a few good worship songs? Maybe enjoy some poetry?

Why would anyone want instructions?

Comfort for Parents Who Have Regrets. Philippians 1 and 2.

I am confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” Philippians 1:6.

For it is God who is at work in you, causing you to both desire and to fulfill His good purpose” Philippians 2:13.

God gives us the desire to serve Him, and then He gives us the ability, the tools, and the opportunity. Nothing in our lives will ever be more fulfilling than serving God. Pray for that desire for yourself and your children and for opportunities to fulfill it.

Thoughts on Well-Publicized Celebrity Conversions. Philippians 1:15-18

When it comes to celebrity conversions, I err on the side of skepticism.

“Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice” Philippians 1:15-18.

“So how am I to respond? I’ve decided that I really don’t care about their motives, whether mixed, bad, or indifferent. Every time one of them opens his mouth, Christ is proclaimed, so I just cheer them on!” Philippians 1:18.

ARE YOU WILLING TO BE INTERRUPTED BY GOD? Acts 27.

“By now, much time had passed and the voyage was already dangerous … Paul gave his advice and told them, ‘Men, I see that this voyage is headed toward damage and heavy loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.’ But the centurion paid attention to the captain and the owner of the ship rather than what Paul said” Acts 27:9-11.

“You should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete and sustain this damage and loss. Now I urge you to take courage, for there will be no loss of any of your lives, but only of the ship. For this night an angel of the God I belong to and serve stood by me and said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul, you must stand before Caesar. And behold! God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.’ Therefore, take courage, men, because I believe God that it will be just the way it was told to me. However, we must run aground on a certain island” Acts 27:21-26.

“Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, ‘Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.’ Then the soldiers cut the ropes holding the skiff and let it drop away” Acts 27:31-32.

“Today is the fourteenth day that you have been going without food, having eaten nothing. Therefore, I urge you to take some food. For this has to do with your survival’ … They all became encouraged and took food themselves” Acts 27:33-36.

Remember the way this story began?

Are you prepared to have your plans interrupted by God?

Do you seek God? Do you ask Him to lead you—and do you expect to hear from Him?

“My sheep hear My voice and they follow Me” John 10:27.

“CALLOUSED” IS AN ADJECTIVE. Acts 28:26-27.

“Go to these people and say: You will listen and listen, yet never understand; you will look and look, yet never perceive. For the hearts of these people have grown CALLOUS, their ears hard of hearing, and they have SHUT THEIR EYES; otherwise, they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted, and I would heal them” Acts 28:26-27.

People say God’s word will step on your toes. Maybe not literally. But His word will touch you. Will you let it sink in and change you, or will you resist His touch and grow calloused?
