TREASURE. Matthew 13:52.

Jesus talked a lot about treasure.

“Every expert in the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings from storage treasures both new and old” Matthew 13:52.

An expert in the law would be an expert in the OLD TESTAMENT.

And if that same expert were then to become a disciple (student) of the kingdom of heaven, he would begin discovering the amazing grace in the NEW TESTAMENT.

The Old Testament teaches us the joy of living with the discipline of observing the law; the New Testament teaches us the joy of walking in grace.

We walk in GRACE. We are forgiven and freed from the grip of sin. But the law remains a storehouse of TREASURE. Never neglect it.

“All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful. Yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness” Hebrews 12:11.

“GRIPPED BY GREAT FEAR.” Luke 8:37.

But it was not all sunshine and rainbows. As John Eldredge puts it, when Jesus entered humanity, He invaded a world at war.

Christmas was an INVASION, the most powerful foe the devil would ever face was born behind enemy lines.

  • They were scared when they heard the Father say, “this is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.”
  • Scared when He cast out demons.
  • Scared when He commanded the wind and waves to be still.
  • Scared when He came to the disciples walking on the sea.
  • Scared when He told the paralytic to “take up your pallet and go home.”
  • Scared when He raised the dead.
  • Scared when He was transfigured with Moses and Elijah.
  • Scared when He boldly announced to the torch-carrying crowd that He was Jesus, the One they had come to arrest.
  • And scared when the tomb was empty.

ARE YOU WATCHING THE STORIES AROUND YOU? Luke 8:8, 12-15.

“Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown” Luke 8:8.

“Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches, and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those who receive the word with an honest and good heart, retain it, and by enduring produce a crop” Luke 8:12-15.

Authority.  Matthew 28:18.

As an attorney, I possessed LIMITED AUTHORITY to file papers with the Court.

As a doctor, my brother possessed LIMITED AUTHORITY to prescribe medicine.

Jesus possesses unlimited authority.

Jesus said, “ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH HAS BEEN GIVEN UNTO ME” Matthew 28:18.

DO YOU EVER HAVE DOUBTS?Luke 7:20.

But who had doubts? JOHN THE BAPTIST HAD DOUBTS.

“DON’T DOUBT IN THE DARKNESS WHAT GOD TOLD YOU IN THE LIGHT.”

EMOTIONS. Luke 7:37-38, 47.

We are emotional creatures.

If you love God and spend time with Him, you will become passionate about Him.

“A woman in town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster jar of fragrant oil and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with the hair of her head, kissing them and anointing them with the fragrant oil…” Luke 7:37-38, 47.

We should all love Jesus like that. We should work our MINDS to study the Bible like Ezra, the only man the Bible repeatedly calls an expert in the word.

But we should also love Jesus with the PASSION of this woman who anointed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.

THE AMAZING THRILL OF GREAT WORK. Matthew 11:28-30.

Have you worked to the point of exhaustion, yet felt the peace of knowing you were using your energy EXACTLY as you should?

But Jesus knows how weary life can be. We are steeped in sin, surrounded by broken, hurting people. No one has enough money and bosses are never satisfied. But Jesus offers relief. He wants to LIFT YOUR BURDEN.

“Come to me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30.

AGENCY: Adult-Like Faith. Matthew 8:5-10.

What Barbosa is enjoying is the satisfaction of AGENCY. You feel it when you have money in your pocket. You feel it when you have a new job. Or when you get your first driver’s license or buy your first car.

Next-level agency is the power to direct the activities of OTHERS.

The Centurion objected. “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But only say the word and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.

[He could have said, “I am an AGENT, with AGENTS under me.]

I say to this one ‘Go’ and he goes, and to another ‘Come’ and he comes, and to my slave ‘Do this’ and he does it” Matthew 8:8-9. How did Jesus reply? “I have found no one in Israel with such great faith!” Matthew 8:10.

The faith of the Centurion might be described as “ADULT-LIKE FAITH.” The officer clearly has no doubts, skepticism, or questions. Anyone with doubt would have insisted on bringing Jesus to the house just in case. The Centurion has the un-doubting faith of a child. But he has more–he has the experience-driven faith of an adult who has spent years operating in a realm of agency. It is his “adultlike faith” that gives the centurion the confidence to encourage Jesus not to waste time traveling to the man’s house when He can simply say the words from where He stands.

This Gentile, this formerly idol-worshipping Roman, understands that when a principal speaks the command, the agents must obey. And Jesus has proven Himself to be able to speak to men, women, illness, weather–anything. When the LORD speaks, the UNIVERSE obeys. The centurion figured it out: Jesus is the LORD of the universe.

No wonder Jesus said He had not seen anyone in Israel with faith to match the centurion’s.

More Blessed than Mary. Luke 11:28

“Even more blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it” Luke 11:28.

Yet Jesus says WE are more blessed than she if we:

(1) Hear the Word of God, and

(2) Obey it.

Are you hearing the Word? At home? In your car? At church or school? With friends? In your private reading?

And are you obeying His Word?

Your Mouth is Number One! Proverbs 18:24.

The reason we should eat healthy is because food is the number one way you interact with the environment.

In the same way, we must control our words, because our words are the number one way we interact with the world.

But can you control what you say? YES!

Paul writes, “Do not let unwholesome words come out of your mouth, but only such a word as is good for encouragement, that it may give GRACE to those who hear” Ephesians 4:29.

James is even stronger: “If anyone thinks he is a Christian and does not bridle his tongue, he is deceiving himself and his faith is worthless” James 1:26.

What about Jesus? Did He ever speak on the tongue? Yes.

Jesus said, “The good man out of the good treasure in his heart produces good, and the evil man, out of the evil treasure produces evil, for OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART, THE MOUTH SPEAKS” Luke 6:45.

Jesus also said that we will have to explain our bad words: “On the day of judgment, people will give account for every careless word they speak” Matt. 12:36.

DEATH and LIFE are in the power of the tongue,” 18:24.

And “a gentle tongue is a TREE OF LIFE, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit” 15:4.
