PLANTING MUSTARD. Matthew 13:31-32.

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It’s the smallest of all the seeds, but when grown, it’s taller than all the vegetables and becomes a tree and the birds of the air come and build nests in its branches” Matthew 13:31-32.

But what if Jesus is talking about how we spend our TIME?

GIVE HIM A MUSTARD SEED OF YOUR TIME.

HOW SMALL IS YOUR PART? Matthew 13:31-32.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. But when the farmer plants it in his field, it will become the largest of all the herbs and will become a tree with birds nesting in its branches” Matthew 13:31-32.

CULTIVATE THE SEED. Matthew 13:1-23.

A farmer went out to plant seeds. Some fell by the road and birds gobbled them up. Some fell on the rocks. They sprung up, but had no roots and the sun scorched them. Some fell among thorn bushes and could not compete for sunlight and water and space to grow. But some fell on good ground and bore fruit, 30, 60, or 100 times greater than the seed itself.

The disciples asked Jesus to explain. He said, ‘When some attend PASSION (or a similar crusade or revival) and don’t get it, then the enemy comes and steals away what little they had. Others hear the sermons at Passion with joy, but they have no root. They endure for a little while, but when it gets tough, they fall away. And the seeds among thorns represent those who go to Passion, get all excited, but the worries of the world choke their faith and they become UNFRUITFUL. But he with good soil hears the message of Passion, understands it, and will bear fruit, up to 30, 60, or 100 times greater than the tiny seed planted in his heart.’ Matthew 13:1-23 (paraphrased).

TREASURE. Matthew 13:52.

Jesus talked a lot about treasure.

“Every expert in the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings from storage treasures both new and old” Matthew 13:52.

An expert in the law would be an expert in the OLD TESTAMENT.

And if that same expert were then to become a disciple (student) of the kingdom of heaven, he would begin discovering the amazing grace in the NEW TESTAMENT.

The Old Testament teaches us the joy of living with the discipline of observing the law; the New Testament teaches us the joy of walking in grace.

We walk in GRACE. We are forgiven and freed from the grip of sin. But the law remains a storehouse of TREASURE. Never neglect it.

“All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful. Yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness” Hebrews 12:11.

“GRIPPED BY GREAT FEAR.” Luke 8:37.

But it was not all sunshine and rainbows. As John Eldredge puts it, when Jesus entered humanity, He invaded a world at war.

Christmas was an INVASION, the most powerful foe the devil would ever face was born behind enemy lines.

  • They were scared when they heard the Father say, “this is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.”
  • Scared when He cast out demons.
  • Scared when He commanded the wind and waves to be still.
  • Scared when He came to the disciples walking on the sea.
  • Scared when He told the paralytic to “take up your pallet and go home.”
  • Scared when He raised the dead.
  • Scared when He was transfigured with Moses and Elijah.
  • Scared when He boldly announced to the torch-carrying crowd that He was Jesus, the One they had come to arrest.
  • And scared when the tomb was empty.

ARE YOU WATCHING THE STORIES AROUND YOU? Luke 8:8, 12-15.

“Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown” Luke 8:8.

“Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches, and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those who receive the word with an honest and good heart, retain it, and by enduring produce a crop” Luke 8:12-15.

Authority.  Matthew 28:18.

As an attorney, I possessed LIMITED AUTHORITY to file papers with the Court.

As a doctor, my brother possessed LIMITED AUTHORITY to prescribe medicine.

Jesus possesses unlimited authority.

Jesus said, “ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH HAS BEEN GIVEN UNTO ME” Matthew 28:18.

DO YOU EVER HAVE DOUBTS?Luke 7:20.

But who had doubts? JOHN THE BAPTIST HAD DOUBTS.

“DON’T DOUBT IN THE DARKNESS WHAT GOD TOLD YOU IN THE LIGHT.”

EMOTIONS. Luke 7:37-38, 47.

We are emotional creatures.

If you love God and spend time with Him, you will become passionate about Him.

“A woman in town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster jar of fragrant oil and stood behind Him at His feet, weeping, and began to wash His feet with her tears. She wiped His feet with the hair of her head, kissing them and anointing them with the fragrant oil…” Luke 7:37-38, 47.

We should all love Jesus like that. We should work our MINDS to study the Bible like Ezra, the only man the Bible repeatedly calls an expert in the word.

But we should also love Jesus with the PASSION of this woman who anointed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.

THE AMAZING THRILL OF GREAT WORK. Matthew 11:28-30.

Have you worked to the point of exhaustion, yet felt the peace of knowing you were using your energy EXACTLY as you should?

But Jesus knows how weary life can be. We are steeped in sin, surrounded by broken, hurting people. No one has enough money and bosses are never satisfied. But Jesus offers relief. He wants to LIFT YOUR BURDEN.

“Come to me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30.
