YOU REAP WHERE YOU SOW. Ezekiel 6:13.

You will know that I am Yahweh when the slain lie among their idols, around their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, and under every green tree and leafy oak—the PLACES WHERE THEY OFFERED PLEASING AROMAS TO THEIR IDOLS” Ezekiel 6:13.

God, remind us to ‘Fear the Lord and turn away from evil‘ Proverbs 3:7.

Don’t Crush God’s Feelings. Ezekiel 6:9

I was crushed by their promiscuous hearts that turned away from Me and by their eyes that lusted after idols. Ezekiel 6:9

STREET THEATER 2: THE HAIRCUT. Ezekiel 5:1-4; 6:9.

I was crushed by their promiscuous hearts that turned away from Me and by their eyes that lusted after idols.” Ezekiel 6:9

Now son of man, take a sharp sword, use it as you would a barber’s razor, and shave your head and beard. Then take a set of scales and divide the hair. You are to burn a third of it in the city… take a third and slash it with the sword all around the city; and scatter a third to the wind… BUT you are to take a few strands and secure them in the folds of your robe.” Ezekiel 5:1-4.

A THIRD of your people will die by plague and be consumed by famine…; a THIRD will fall by the sword all around you; and I will scatter a THIRD to every direction of the wind…. Yet I will leave a remnant when you are scattered among the nations.” Ezekiel 5:12;6:8.

Heaven’s Courtroom. Ezekiel 8:6-16.

But the devil is NOT God’s prosecutor.

A prosecutor is a respected Officer of the Court, with a legitimate, honored role in a legal proceeding. God has not given Satan that role or any role.

“Son of Man, do you see what they are doing here? … You will see even more detestable things” … Then He brought me to the temple court where there was a hole in the wall. “Son of Man, go in and see the terrible things they are doing.” And I went in and looked and saw … all the idols of the house of Israel. … “Son of man, do you see what the elders are doing? For they are saying ‘the Lord does not see us.’ … They were bowing to the east in worship of the sun.” Ezekiel 8:6-16.

Jesus, we praise you for being our Advocate with the Father!

THE SCANDAL OF THE SERMON ILLUSTRATION. Ezekiel 1-4.

We have gotten carried away with sermon illustrations.

A New Testament preacher is a man of letters. He traffics in words, reading and writing sophisticated arguments meant to help congregations better understand the most important—and most challenging—work of literature ever written, the Bible. When you are confused by the talking heads on television, or when a college professor challenges your faith, it is the preacher to whom you look for guidance. He ought to be a man of learning and thoughtful reflection, capable of offering well-reasoned responses to the skeptics of our day. The man ought to be a writer and thinker, an orator, perhaps, but not the ringmaster of a circus.

In contrast to New Testament preachers, God once chose an Old Testament priest to live out elaborate dramas. Suddenly Ezekiel’s life became a series of painful sermon illustrations.

I read an interesting statement the other day: “In America, there is so much focus on the illustration, on the modern application, compared to that boring, stiff British Anglicanism with its constant emphasis on the scripture itself.”[2] That struck me as quite an indictment—I know my own style as both a teacher and writer is exactly what they said: heavy on illustration and application.

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” 2 Timothy 2:15.

You’re a Ferrari too. God has given you a Ferrari.”  https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/bum-steer-grapevine-pastor-ed-young-plans-24-hour-bed-in-on-roof-of-church/

AN ACQUIRED TASTE. Ezekiel 3:2-3.

“Liver again? No!”

“Keep eating it. It’s an acquired taste.”

“…But radishes are too hot to put on salads.”

“You’ll be fine. It’s an acquired taste.”

“…How can anyone eat sardines? They smell awful.”

“It’s an acquired taste.”

God, help us to ACQUIRE A TASTE—A CRAVING—for Your word.

STREET THEATER. Ezekiel 3:3; 4:1-17.

The Bible employs street theater. God enlists prophets to LIVE OUT His messages.

And no one is called to more outrageous street theater than Ezekiel.

LOOKING UP FROM THE BOTTOM.

“I called on Your Name Yahweh from the depths of the pit. You hear my plea; do not ignore my cry for relief. You come near when I call on You. You say, ‘Do not be afraid.’” Lamentations 3:55-57.

“I called on Your Name from the depths of the pit … You come near when I call and You say, ‘Do not be afraid.’” Lamentations 3:55-57.

SCHOOL IS NOT PUNISHMENT.

When God punished Israel, education dried up.  “Instruction is no more, and even Zion’s prophets receive no visions from the Lord” Lamentations 2:9.

School is a blessing, not a punishment.

NOT going to school is a punishment.

TWO QUESTIONS. Lamentations 3:31-33.

QUESTION #1. Can you name this villain? To what cruel person do the following verses refer?

He is a bear waiting in ambush, a lion in hiding. He forced me off my way and tore me to pieces. He left me desolate. He strung his bow and set me as the target for his arrows. He pierced my kidneys with his arrows. I am a laughingstock to all my people, mocked by their songs all day long… He ground my teeth in the gravel and made me cower in the dust” Lamentations 3:10-16.

QUESTION #2. How does God FEEL about punishing His children? (Thoughts?)

For the Lord will not reject us forever. Even if He causes suffering, He will show compassion according to His abundant faithful love. FOR HE DOES NOT ENJOY BRINGING AFFLICTION OR SUFFERING ON MANKIND” vv. 31-33.
