READ THE EPISTLES. Titus 2:2-8.

When I read the Bible as a college student I gravitated toward the epistles—the letters to other believers. Others my age had different favorites. One young lady I knew loved the Old Testament for its amazing histories. Some loved Proverbs because you can always find one or two nuggets to think about the rest ofContinue reading “READ THE EPISTLES. Titus 2:2-8.”

When You Need Courage. Proverbs 28:1.

Have you ever been afraid? Fear is a difficult emotion. Sometimes fear is vague, dull, and unfocused: you feel anxious, but you’re not sure why. Other times it is acute: you know EXACTLY what you’re afraid of! Fear, whether in the form of fright, worry, anxiety, terror, or dread, affects everyone. What is the answer?Continue reading “When You Need Courage. Proverbs 28:1.”

Poisonous Lawsuits. Hosea 10:4.

In his book NARCONOMICS, economist Tom Wainwright argues that drug cartels do not necessarily have more conflicts than other businesses. But they resolve conflicts with guns because they cannot use the legal system.  In other words, drug lords murder people because when a contract for illegal drugs is breached, the seller can’t file a lawsuitContinue reading “Poisonous Lawsuits. Hosea 10:4.”

Proverbs: God’s Book on Parenting.

Parenting books are almost as popular as diet books; it’s a huge market.  You would think babies were different today—but they are the same as always.  And Solomon put the basics of parenting in the Book of Proverbs 3,000 years ago: DISCIPLINE YOUR KIDS.  “Discipline your son and it will bring you peace of mindContinue reading “Proverbs: God’s Book on Parenting.”

“What is This Sound of Sheep and Cattle That I Hear?”

I laughed in court when a man who has been in and out of prison, convicted of a string of armed robberies, testified that during a dice game he was keeping an eye on his money because “everybody ain’t got integrity.”  True. “EVERYBODY AIN’T GOT INTEGRITY.” Period. Mic drop. Many of us lack integrity.  KingContinue reading ““What is This Sound of Sheep and Cattle That I Hear?””

A Biblical Romance.

The story of Ruth may be the most romantic in the Bible. Ruth was a widow and moved to Israel with her mother-in-law Naomi, also a widow. Ruth did all she could to take care of Naomi. She was selfless. Soon Ruth meets Boaz, a wealthy farmer, and he takes care of her and Naomi.Continue reading “A Biblical Romance.”

Romance and Noble Character.

The book of Ruth—a powerful story of the Messiah who is our Kinsman-Redeemer—can also be read as the simple story of the romance between Ruth and Boaz.  The love between the two provides a good example of some of the keys to a good relationship.  To begin, Ruth was LOYAL to her mother-in-law Naomi.  AfterContinue reading “Romance and Noble Character.”

Do You Need Courage? Part Two.

Remember where courage comes from? Integrity. If you obey God, you will have courage. If you disobey, you will be afraid. After Israel defeated Jericho, the men marched against the kingdom of Ai. But the men of Ai overpowered them, killed 36 of them and chased them away. “As a result, the people’s hearts meltedContinue reading “Do You Need Courage? Part Two.”

Do You Need Courage?

Courage does not mean having no fear. Courage is moving forward in spite of fear. When times are tough and the future is in doubt, we need courage. How do you get courage? Obedience. Integrity means “wholeness.” In math, an “integer” is a whole number, right? If you have integrity, you are a whole person.Continue reading “Do You Need Courage?”
