Advertisers do violence to some of our best words. “Refreshing” is one such word. According to those who draft ad copy, you can be refreshed by snacks, drinks, soap, coffee, and a dozen more things—but the meaning is so poor, the so-called “refreshing” so brief. Every Morning: New Mercy from God! Lamentations 3:22-23

Because of the Lord’s faithful love, we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness! Lamentations 3:22-23. —Great promise after pages and pages about God’s judgment. He will punish sin. We do reap what we sow. But He is merciful too. Crime Doesn’t Pay.

More specifically, SIN does not pay.  Do not be deceived by appearances. God is watching and He will address it.  After all, He says, “vengeance is Mine. I will repay” Romans 12:19. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” Galatians 6:7. Mercy.

“Corporal” or “bodily” punishment is effective with children because it is painful.  There is also fearful anticipation associated with the instrument of punishment. In order of mildest to most severe, I would rank them: hand, wooden spoon, ruler, belt, tree branch/switch, the cricket-bat-style wooden paddle.  I feared my father’s belt—that was his most severe tool. Continue reading “Mercy.”
