FRUIT. John 15:8,16.

When I was a boy my parents planted peach trees. For years, they bore only leaves and a bit of shade. Finally, they bore fruit. Fruit trees are like that—they don’t bear much fruit during the first years. We don’t either.

But as we get older, God gives us the capacity to bear spiritual fruit: to point people to Jesus, to talk intelligently about Him and His love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. As Jesus prepared for the cross, He told His disciples He would be leaving: “I am going to prepare a place for you” John 14:2.

But why not take the disciples with Him? Why not take us? It hurts to live in this world—we suffer emotional and physical pains all our lives. If our sins have been forgiven, why doesn’t He just put us on the elevator and whisk us up to heaven now? Why does He leave us here where He knows—we all know—that we are going to continue to struggle and suffer for years?

We are here to bear fruit.

“My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples…. You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you so that you should go out and produce fruit—fruit that would be eternal” John 15:8,16.

Have you borne fruit? Can you point to someone whose life is better because of you?

Jesus CHOSE YOU. Think about that.

HE.

CHOSE.

YOU.

And He chose you because He knows you can/will bear fruit. How exciting is that? Jesus chose us to bear fruit for Him—to make a difference. To bless people with joy, hope, comfort, and grace, and to TALK to them about Jesus and His amazing love that fixes everything.

All of us work hard when faced with the right challenges. But let’s commit ourselves to serving God with all our energy:

We were made to work hard FOR HIS KINGDOM. IT IS THE ONLY REASON WE ARE HERE.

How can you bear fruit today?

TRUTH BOMBS. John 14:3-6; 18:37-38.

Jesus was an amazing speaker—not only because of the things He said, but also because of the things He did not say.

The Gospels reveal a master at work. For example, at some point Jesus cobbled together the following thought: ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ But He did not just blurt it out. Instead He worked it into a conversation in a most unlikely way:

“‘I go to prepare a place for you…. You know the way where I am going.’

Thomas said, ‘Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?’

Jesus answered, ‘I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14:3-6.

What an enigmatic comment. Surely the disciples looked at each other around the circle dumbfounded. Like many things Jesus taught them, it would not make sense until after His resurrection.

Later Pilate interrogates Jesus, trying Him for religious charges Pilate does not understand.

“Jesus says, ‘I have come into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.’

‘What is truth?’ said Pilate.” John 18:37-38.

When the Roman leader lobs the perfect softball question, we expect Jesus to answer, “I AM the truth.” But Jesus says nothing. No truth bomb for the Roman governor.

Why not? Because Pilate spoke not as seeker, but cynic. Pilate’s Roman education rendered him a skeptic. “What is truth?” reads like a rhetorical question, Pilate’s way of saying, “there is no truth,” and Jesus wasted no time on hardened doubters. Unlike the centurion at the cross, Pilate had no faith to build on. Just as He taught us to use restraint with those of persistent unbelief, Jesus will not cast His pearls before swine only to have them trampled. He will not waste words of truth on a man who lacks the heart[1] to receive it.

God, bring us opportunities to share your truth with genuine seekers—and give us wisdom and words that might reach even the skeptics around us.

[1] Jesus may also be showing mercy. Pilate will forever be the man who condemned the Son of God to death. Had Jesus spoken more clearly, Pilate would be that much guiltier for rejecting the Truth. Knowing that there are degrees of punishment in hell—and knowing Pilate’s heart was not going to repent—perhaps it was an act of mercy NOT to say, “I am the Truth,” thus increasing Pilate’s sin.

GOD IS YOUR FATHER. John 14:18.

I have friends who do not expect God to speak to them, Christians who believe God spoke in Bible times, but does not speak today. They argue that because the Bible is now a complete book, Christians can find everything they need in the Bible and do not need to hear from God.

I disagree. We often face challenging decisions that require Divine guidance. Sometimes we need to be led. What if you receive a cancer diagnosis, then a second opinion, and you now face two doctors who are in disagreement? Do you take the aggressive and expensive treatment for a disease you may not have, or do you do nothing, and risk becoming sicker? Do you get a third opinion? A decision like this could take years off your life, and cost a fortune. Is there a Bible verse that will tell you what to do? If so, how will you find it?

God will not abandon you to muddle through on your own.

He is your Father. Fathers give their children wisdom and guidance. Some believers describe life as if we are all orphans—they do not expect guidance from the Lord, but they have His book, if only they can find the right passages…. But we are not orphans. In fact, Jesus addresses this notion specifically:

“I will NOT leave you as orphans. I will come to you.” John 14:18.

Jesus will come to you and He WILL speak! Keys to hearing His voice:

1) EXPECT Him to speak to you, and–

2) Be willing to OBEY no matter what He says. No matter what! Lay down all your wishes and desires through prayer—then ask Him for His answers, HIS wishes.

3) Study the Bible so well that God can use it to speak to you—it will always be your first and BEST source of guidance.

4) Spend so much time in His word that you develop an “ear” for His voice—because He speaks to you the most when you are reading His words.

Then He will speak to you.

“My sheep hear my voice and they follow me.” John 10:27.

God, teach us to know Your voice, to LISTEN and OBEY. Remind us when we are mistaken—when time passes and we discover it was NOT you—but help us to always EXPECT you to speak.

SATAN MADE A TERRIBLE BLUNDER. “Then Satan Entered Judas.” Luke 22:3.

Carman, one of the most dramatic showmen in Christian music, recorded an unforgettable song that tells the story of Jesus’s death and resurrection: “THE CHAMPION.” This was 1985 and there is a ROCKY-feel to this upbeat, synthesizer-backed ballad that pictures Jesus and the devil in the boxing ring together. Satan arrives, proud and ready for a fight.  Jesus arrives, they touch hands, box for forty days, then Jesus drops his hands from the boxer’s traditional defensive posture and he allows Satan to land the death blow. Jesus falls to the ground. The spoken lyrics continue:

“The devils roared in victory, the saints shocked and perplexed, as wounds appeared upon his hands and feet.

Then Satan kicked him in his side and blood and water flowed. And they waited for the ten-count of defeat.

God the Father, turned his head,

His tears announcing Christ was dead.

The ten-count would proclaim the battle’s end.

Then Satan trembled through his sweat

In unexpected horror yet,

as God started to count by saying

‘Ten, (hey, wait a minute, God)

Nine, (stop, you’re counting wrong)

Eight, (his eyes),

Seven, (what’s that twitching?)

Six, (oh no!)

Five, (he’s alive!) ….”

And as the song changes, “Suddenly Satan realizes it’s not a ten-count: it’s a drumroll.”[1] The song goes on to proclaim the Lordship of Jesus more dramatically than I can hope to re-create here.  You must hear it (see the link below)—what a great combination of campy ’80s/Rocky-style storytelling, but also some profound thoughts about the crucifixion! The song ends with the words: “Satan is defeated and Jesus… is… the Champion!”  (No seriously, you’ve got to hear this.)

What I have always remembered about this dramatic, amazing song is a single unexpected moment. When God begins the ten-count by saying, “Ten” and the devil realizes something is wrong: “it’s not a ten-count, it’s a drum roll.”

Satan is shocked. His whole plan backfired.  Have you ever thought about that? Why would the enemy of our souls be in such a hurry to crucify Jesus? Did he not know that the crucifixion and resurrection were God’s plan? Jesus certainly knew it. 

Satan made a terrible blunder. I’m not sure why.

Satan misread the Old Testament prophecies. Jesus explained that parables are enigmatic, revealing truth to those with tender hearts and ‘ears to hear,’ while keeping truth hidden from those whose hearts are hardened, Matthew 13:10-17. Perhaps prophecies are like enigmatic parables; they allow God to speak truth to His children, while concealing it from others.

It seems God did not allow anyone but Jesus to understand that the Messianic prophecies are divided–some apply to the first coming of Christ, some to the second. We know no humans understood this before Christ. Perhaps the devil did not understand either. If he thought the first coming was the ONLY coming, perhaps he also thought a crucifixion would mean he won, somehow.

The devil is genius-smart, but his pride clearly blinds him to certain realities–such as the reality that he could never have defeated God.** (No matter how smart you are, your pride, hatred, bias, jealousy, lust, or other sin can influence you: it will cause you to make mistakes, to misread scripture, situations, and people, to simply be WRONG.)

Why didn’t Satan grasp that by killing Jesus, he was acting as a tool in God’s hand, making possible the salvation of millions of souls? Again, I’m not certain.

But for whatever reason, the devil’s interests were temporarily aligned with those of his greatest enemy: they both moved toward the cross.

When “Satan entered Judas” in Luke 22:3, he did it to ensure that Judas would betray Jesus into the hands of the priests who would put Him on trial and push Pilate to crucify Him. Satan wanted Jesus to go to the cross.

And Jesus knew the cross was ahead, and moved willingly toward it: “Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and the chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day” Matthew 16:21. A Tim Sheppard song puts it more bluntly: Jesus was “Born to die to rise again…”[2]

When Jesus predicted His death and resurrection, the enemy was certainly listening. Satan had been at war with God since before human history. When God made Adam and Eve, Satan showed up. When God sent His Son to earth, Satan knew his war had just taken a dramatic turn. He would have assigned minions to watch and listen to every moment of Jesus’s entire life.

The incarnation of Jesus was the most important thing that had ever happened in the devil’s war against God. He was paying attention. Satan knew the Bible backwards and forwards. He understood a great deal about God. But he did not understand the cross, and he did not anticipate the resurrection. Of course, I don’t know exactly what the enemy knew or understood. I can only speculate. But when Jesus died on the cross, I am certain the devil wanted him to stay dead.

And then Aslan broke the stone table. Remember that scene in THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE? C.S. Lewis understood what Carman tried to convey in his song: the devil was taken by surprise somehow.

Aslan was killed as a sacrifice in place of Edmund, but during the night, there was a great crack and the Stone Table was split down the middle. The Deep Magic, inscribed in the Stone Table, was reversed by Aslan’s sacrifice, according to the rules of the Deeper Magic from Before the Dawn of Time, thus defeating the White Witch.

You must respect the enemy. We mock him and make jokes, we ridicule him in silly songs, weak Christians with very little prayer life or knowledge of scripture talk boldly to the devil as though fussing at a small bird that flew into the house by mistake: “Get out of here, you devil! Go on! Shooo!”)—but you should respect your enemy–or a better way to phrase it might be: do not underestimate your enemy.

The devil is a genius beyond all human intellects. He has been paying attention for literally thousands and thousands of years. He knows scripture, he knows human nature, and he knows you.

But he does not know everything. He is not omniscient, or omnipotent. And God constantly uses everything the devil does, causing “all things to work together for good, to those who love God and are called according to His purpose” Romans 8:28. The devil has knowledge and power. But his knowledge is limited and his power is limited. God is a million-billion-trillion times smarter and more powerful than Satan.

The finite cannot be compared to the infinite. Think about it mathematically: the finite cannot be compared to the infinite.

God is so much greater than the devil that your enemy is small and weak and infinitesimal by comparison.

And the crucifixion—Satan’s greatest victory—became his greatest defeat. He completely misread the situation. In spite of a genius mind and millennia of experience with God, Satan did not understand the cross. 

I suspect his hatred and hubris blinded him to the realities of God’s love and forgiveness. Imagine that: a brilliant military strategist, a war general who has been battling God for millennia, yet his mind is so filled with hate and hubris that he loses the war to a sacrificial act of love and humility. He should have known the simple truth: “God is love.” But the mind of this evil genius was corrupted and blinded by hatred and rage, and he caused Judas to betray Jesus, Pilate to surrender to the mob, and Roman soldiers to crucify Him. Satan must have enjoyed and relished the crucifixion.

But as the song says, “It’s Friday, but Sunday’s a Coming!” And three days later, everything changed.

In the crucifixion, Satan’s greatest victory became his greatest defeat.

** It takes more than intellectual genius to interpret the scripture. You need love and humility. You need to know something about the God of love who created the universe. Otherwise, you will read scripture and draw incorrect conclusions, as Satan does.

Signs and Wonders. Mark 13:21-23.

When crowds debated whether Jesus was a good man, one common-sense argument stood out: “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” John 9:16. 

That makes sense, right? Do bad men heal blind eyes or make the lame walk? Do bad men raise the dead? Nicodemus said the same thing directly to Jesus: “No one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with Him” John 3:2.

But do you remember what happened when Moses performed signs for Pharaoh? “Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it turned into a serpent. Pharaoh, in turn, summoned his sorcerers and they did the same thing by their magic arts” Exodus 7:10-11. God allowed Pharaoh’s magicians to duplicate many of the miracles of Moses. But were they good men? No.

Similarly, Jesus predicted that bad men would perform miracles. “False messiahs and false prophets will rise up and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect” Mark 13:22.

The truth is, bad people often do good things (what better way to gain your trust?).

Deceivers will perform miracles—often by fraud and illusion, but sometimes by supernatural power. That is, sometimes the signs or wonders they perform may be “verifiable” miracles. After all, the enemy has supernatural power too.

God will allow false prophets, false teachers, liars and con-men to deceive you with miraculous “signs and wonders” if you are not on guard. Jesus states it clearly: false prophets will perform signs to lead astray the elect.  

What can be done? Jesus says “Do not believe it! … You must watch!” Mark 13:21 and 23.

But what can we do, in a practical sense, to guard ourselves from such deceptions? If we see someone perform a miracle, do we assume them to be deceivers? Not necessarily. Miracles are reported around the world all the time. Some may be the work of false prophets, but some are almost certainly genuine.

Here is the test for truth:

Do not believe the speaker’s message to be Biblical because you think his sign is genuine. Instead, believe the sign to be genuine if the speaker’s message is Biblical.

Following the life of Christ, the gospel message is complete. The New Testament is a finished work. There are no changes to come, no revisions, no sequels. The New Testament clearly articulates that Jesus is God’s Son and He died for our sins and rose again, conquering sin and death. “Prophets” who preach anything else are preaching heresy, and their alleged “signs and wonders” must be ignored.

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!” Galatians 1:8.

Remember: you will see miracles. They prove nothing. Faithfulness to the gospel of Christ is the test for truth.

Jesus said the end times would be characterized not only by “wars and rumors of wars,” by earthquakes and famines and the beginning of the birth pangs, but by DECEPTION. “Take heed that no one misleads you” Matthew 24:4. I have never seen such a chorus of misleading voices. Between anti-intellectualism, social media, Artificial Intelligence, Deep Fakes, incompetent Influencers, the predatory wellness movement, biased reporting masquerading as journalism, the ignorance of expertise, plagiarism and other factors decimating scholarship and the peer-review process, the rise of false religions, cults, and new age spirituality, I am more inclined to call ours the end times than ever before.

When Jesus Talks About the End Times, He Talks About Stewardship. Matthew 24:3-8.

During the final days of Jesus’s ministry, His disciples approached Him alone. They had questions about the future. (Don’t we all?)  They said: “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3.

Do you remember His response? Jesus did not begin by answering their questions. He began with a warning:

“Watch out that no one deceives you” Matthew 24:4.

The first thing Jesus said to His disciples was to watch out, because people will try to deceive you. But deceive you about what?

“For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many” 24:5.

First: WATCH OUT that no one deceives you into believing He is Jesus, returned from Heaven. (It sounds crazy, but what cult leader has NOT told followers He was Jesus?)

He continues: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these events are the beginning of the birth pains” Matthew 24:6-8.

Second: DO NOT BE ALARMED by wars. You will hear about wars, and wars must happen, but they are only the beginning. Do not assume that every new war is a ‘sign of the times,’ and we will all be raptured tomorrow.

Here is the Word of Jesus on His Second Coming: Do not be deceived by those who claim to be Him. Do not be alarmed by wars and hide in your doomsday shelters. Instead, “This is why you must be READY, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” Matthew 24:44.

After warning His disciples, Jesus told stories about faithful stewards, encouraging believers to use their gifts and talents, lead others to Christ, and store up treasure in Heaven.

Third: SERVING JESUS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANALYZING THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES.

Use your gifts, encourage people with hope and love, and make a difference by storing up treasure for your Father in Heaven. That is what matters most.

Read Matthew chapters 24 and 25 together, and you will notice that Jesus steers the conversation about the end times into a discussion of stewardship and faithfulness. We have a job to do. God put you here for a purpose. Let’s focus on doing the work more, and predicting the future less.

No Small Parts. Matthew 25:23.

Actors like to say, “there are no small parts, only small actors.” It’s a great bit of encouragement: do your best, even if you have a small part, or no part. If you’re an extra in the crowd scenes, be the best extra you can be. If you’re riding the bench, do it well. If your job is to handle laundry for the actors, or to prepare gear for athletes, or to sell tickets to an event you’d rather participate in—whatever your role, do it to the best of your ability. 

Jesus was encouraging too, saying if you are faithful in the small things, God will make you ruler over big things, Matthew 25:23. 

Are you faithful over small things? Your attitude? Your thoughts? Your resentment, anger, and hurt emotions? If you give it all to Him and let Him change you, He may begin to give you the larger opportunities that you long for. In Numbers 3 and 4, God designates tasks for all the Levites. He has plans for them. They have duties far beyond simply their own families.

He has duties for us too. He put us here to be SALT and LIGHT. 

Are you leading others, lighting the way to God’s best? Do your attitude and your words help slow the decay of the world around you? Do you look for the best in others, and draw out those flavors? 

Those are our jobs on earth: light the way, slow the decay, and bring out the best in people.

What can you do today to reach those goals? Be an encourager and a voice of HOPE.

“WHERE THE CARCASS IS, THERE THE VULTURES WILL GATHER” Luke 21:34-35.

A peculiar thing happened the day we lost Secret. The magnificent Thoroughbred had been sick for weeks. I saw from the window that morning that her eyes were bloodshot. Then while we talked to the vet, she collapsed. A few minutes later there were buzzards sitting quietly in every tree, where there had been none before.

It was as though a silent alarm went off: “Horse down! Horse down!,” and scavengers flew in from across the county. The huge birds quietly shifted back and forth, waiting for the horse to die. The scripture above, enigmatic and foreboding, reminds me of that day.

Jesus is speaking of the End Times. He says watch the signs. You can predict tomorrow’s weather by today’s clouds. You know it’s summer when the fig tree buds. And “where the carcass is, there the vultures will gather” Matthew 24:28. In other words, if you are searching for a missing person or animal and you see buzzards wheeling in the sky, you will find the body below the buzzards. The carrion birds are a harbinger of death: a SIGN.

But you must be ALERT. Otherwise, you will miss God’s signs—not only the signs of the times, but the SIGNS of God’s work in your life and the lives around you.

We miss what God is doing because we waste our time DISTRACTED: Scrolling. Streaming. Filling EVERY SECOND with entertainment: music while driving, screens while sitting still. How can we expect to hear from God if we always have other voices in our ears? —And we know drinking and drugs destroy our alertness.

But guess what else makes us fail to see God’s work?

WORRY.

“Be on your guard, so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, AND WORRIES OF LIFE, or that day will come on you unexpectedly, like a trap” Luke 21:34-35.

STOP THE WORRY. The worries of life DULL YOUR MIND. God wants your mind SHARP so you can see His SIGNS and hear His VOICE.

God, keep us ALERT so we never overlook the signs of Your work. Help us LISTEN WELL to Your voice.

Abraham Lincoln, a man who read a short list of books, but mastered each, from the Bible to the works of Shakespeare, once quoted this verse about buzzards in a comical and timely manner:

“When Hugh McCulloch, an official of the Treasury Department, introduced a delegation of New York bankers deferentially, he spoke of their patriotism and quoted, in conclusion, what he thought was a suitable text: ‘Where the treasure is, there will the heart be also.’ Reacting quickly to this fatuous use of Scripture, Lincoln, without hesitation replied, ‘There is another text, Mr. McCulloch, which might apply, ‘Where the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together.’ “

BE ALERT! Do You Want Your Mind Dull or Sharp? Luke 21:34-36.

Jesus warns us to be alert. He says don’t be caught unprepared. Don’t be caught in the dark with no oil for your lamp (charge up that flashlight!). Don’t be like a homeowner who did not know when burglars would come. If you are the manager of the house, don’t be asleep when the Owner of the house returns home.

“Be on your guard, so your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, and worries of life, or that day will come on you unexpectedly—like a trap…. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place” Luke 21:34-36.

What does Jesus name that causes people to be unprepared? Carousing (defined as “drinking alcohol and enjoying oneself in a noisy, lively way”), drunkenness, and worries.

Isn’t that an interesting list? Carousing and drunkenness fit together naturally. But the third item is the “worries of life.” This sounds like one of those childhood sorting games that begins: “Which of these is not like the others? Carousing, drunkenness, and worries.”

Worries of life seem to have nothing in common with the totally carefree mindset of carousing and drunkenness. But Jesus puts the three together, naming them as three things that dull your mind. He seems to say that when you let your worries distract you, you might as well be drunk—you have totally lost your focus.

Does that sound harsh? This is not a statement of judgment. No one is being condemned. But Jesus is warning us: keep your eyes on Me and My word. Don’t turn aside to the left (alcohol) or to the right (worry)—because both of them will dull your minds, and I don’t want you distracted.

Instead, “Be on the alert at all times, PRAYING that you may have strength….”

Dear God, show us those things that distract us. Help us lay them down and focus on you. Help us to be ALERT at all times and to pray and seek You in all things.

Are You Alert to the Things of God? Luke 21:28.

While talking about His second coming, Jesus said to be watchful, to pay attention.

“Be on your guard so that your minds are not dulled from carousing, drunkenness, or the worries of life, or that day will come unexpectedly—like a trap” Luke 21:34

Clearly, partying, drinking, and the like can cause you to miss what God is doing. Jesus says to watch the signs around you the way a farmer studies the weather. Pay attention. Do you need God’s wisdom? Do you need direction or answers? I know I do. And you get those by paying attention. Be watchful.

I was thinking about this in the car, while switching the radio stations around. Several have pastors and other ministries preaching and teaching. Those make you think. They make you watchful. Then I turned on music—secular music—and wow, what a contrast. I instantly realized that that music was sort of mind-numbing. It does not make you think or be watchful. In fact, it does the opposite. It makes you shut down completely and turn off your mind.

Jesus says, “Look up and be watchful, for your redemption draweth nigh” Luke 21:28.

If you need to hear God’s voice, tune in to Him. Pay attention. Turn off the things that distract you. Turn off the phone, social media, the internet, secular music, and all the other worldly “noise” that is keeping you from hearing from God.

Ask Him for help. Ask God to help you tune in and to appreciate silence. God has spoken to your mother and me in the car many times, because once you turn off the music it can be a place of quiet reflection. You need quiet places and quiet times in your life. Set aside time every day to talk to God—AND to listen. Shut things off and learn to enjoy a bit of peace and silence. That is when God will speak to you.

Ask Him to help you create peace and quiet and a listening heart. Ask Him to help you love it.

Then get ready to hear His voice!
